Finding Art For Your Home

You don’t need to hire a curator or spend thousands of dollars to fill your home with beautiful artwork. It’s an easy way to inject new life in your home — so ditch those old-style dogs and fruit still lifes! Helen Bartlett of Refined Interior Staging Solutions walks us through how to curate your own art collection.

WHAT KIND OF ART SHOULD I BUY?

“If it makes you happy or you can relate to it, then buy it,” Helen says.

There’s not a hard-and-fast rule about what qualifies as “good” art or “bad” art. Consider finding more current pieces that incorporate texture or using black-and-white photography for a modern edge.

WHERE CAN I FIND IT?

You can find art anywhere — whether it’s Z Gallerie or Etsy! Helen also recommends taking advantage of our thriving local art scene by checking out the Plaza Art Fair, Brookside Art Annual and First Fridays. If you go the photography route, you can buy inexpensive prints online or even take your own photos.

HOW DO I DISPLAY IT?

“Simple black or metallic skinny frames work really well for hanging artwork,” Helen says. “Floating acrylic frames also offer an up-to-date look.”

Opt for simplicity and clean lines in frames over the carved, ornate look.

“When you incorporate art in your home that you’ve found yourself, it adds a personal element that makes your decorations that much more special,” Helen says.
